Do You Wear A Welding Helmet on A Site Where Safety Helmets are Compulsory?

Article By: Team AWS

Are you currently wearing a welding helmet that offers eye, face, head, hearing and powered air respiratory protection all in one integrated system compliant with AS/NZS Standards? If you answered NO, then please read on. If you answered YES, then we hope you are enjoying your 3M Speedglas 9100 MP Welding Helmet.

Welding Helmets of The Past

In the past, there was no option for welders who worked on hard hat sites and required a welding mask with powered air respiratory protection. Unfortunately, the two forms of personal protective equipment PPE were mutually exclusive. Welders could protect their lungs or they could protect their heads. Either way, a compromise was necessary and compliance to site-wide safety regulations was not possible.

With the launch of the Speedglas 9100 MP (Multi-Protection) welding shield, welders finally had a solution that didn’t compromise their safety.

Welding Helmets Of The Past

A Welding Shield That Protects Your Head from Over-Head Hazards

The Speedglas 9100 MP Welding Helmet features an integrated safety helmet made from heat-resistant polycarbonate that conforms to Australian and New Zealand standard AS/NZS1801 for Head Protection. Welders are protected from overhead hazards all day long giving them compliance without compromise.

Welding Masks with Integrated Powered Air Respiratory Protection

As you’ve probably already heard, Welding Fume was recently reclassified as “Carcinogenic to Humans” by the International Agency for the Research of Cancer. The 3M Adflo Powered Air Purifying Respirator PAPR has a Required Minimum Protection Factor (RMPF) of 50. Meaning that the air the PAPR supplies is a minimum 50 times cleaner than the welder would otherwise be breathing unprotected. To put this into perspective, disposable and reusable respirators have an RMPF of 10 if properly fitted.

A High Impact Grinding Visor that offers Complete Mobility

If you weld using a PAPR mask with a fixed-front and lift the auto-darkening welding helmet to change your settings, view your workpiece or move-around, this breaks your positive pressure respiratory seal.  This allows welding particles suspended in the air to enter your welding shield, compromising your respiratory protection. By lifting the welding mask to move around you also remove your face protection. The 9100 MP flip-up function reveals a large, clear, high impact visor perfect for set-up, inspection, grinding and moving around. With the visor always in place, the welder maintains their respiratory protection with the added benefit of continuous high impact protection from high-velocity hazards.

A Welding Mask That Protects Your Eyes with Crisp True-View Vision.

Speedglas TrueView has changed the game in auto-darkening welding lens optics. True-View allows a wider spectrum of colour through the lens which results in a more realistic viewing experience. The Ultra-Violet and Infra-Red Filter (UV/IR Filter) protects your eyes from the harmful components of light generated from your welding arc whether your welding lens is on or off. You can then adjust the variable shade settings dependent on your application, amperage and the level of visible light. Crisp vision with more realistic colour allows welders to better recognise edges and contours resulting in more accurate work and an ability to move faster resulting in an overall increase in productivity.

A Welding Helmet with Ear Muffs

Welders' working conditions are loud and often well above 85 decibels. Did you know that if a welder forgets their hearing protection for just 10% of their workday, it’s virtually the same as not wearing protection at all? Your ears don’t get used to noise, the ear’s hair cells are being damaged and eventually die. Selecting hearing protection that you want to wear and won’t forget is key. The Speedglas 9100 MP makes this easy with integrated welding earmuffs that you can’t forget and are comfortable to wear. The Speedglas 9100 MP earmuffs give the welder a 25-decibel reduction in hearing exposure.
