Speedglas G5-01 Frequently Asked Questions!

Article By: Team AWS

Since the launch of the new Speedglas G5-01 Heavy-Duty Welding Helmet with Adflo PAPR, we’ve had a few recurring questions come up about the helmet’s award-winning features. So, without further ado, here are the answers you’ve been looking for:

What cover lenses does the G5-01 use?

The inside cover lens and outside cover lens for the Speedglas G5-01VC are the same as for the 9100XXi series: part number 528025 (inside cover lens) and 526000 (outside cover lens). You will, however, require different grinding visor plates (part number 613000) as the G5-01 features a 15% larger grinding visor than the 9100 FX helmets.

How much does the G5-01 weigh compared to other Speedglas helmets?

The helmet weighs the same as a Speedglas 9100 FX Air but has a narrower profile with a more comfortable and advanced head harness. It’s worth bearing in mind that you don’t weigh a helmet on scales or in your hand… you weigh it on your head. The improved ergonomics of the G5-01 means it will feel lighter than a helmet that technically weighs the same: think of it like the difference between holding a cricket bat by the handle compared to the toe end.

What are the differences between the G5-01 and 9100 FX Air?

The G5-01 is a feature-packed, upgraded version of the 9100 FX Air – with a stack of new technology designed specifically for heavy-duty welding. Those upgrading from the 9100 FX Air can expect: Variable Colour technology, an extra dark shade 14, airflow climate control, configurable extra coverage options, Bluetooth connectivity, an optional task light and more.

It’s worth also mentioning that the G5-01 has a 15% larger grinding visor, larger welding lens and lets you completely remove the flip-up welding visor, reducing helmet weight by 35% for non-welding tasks.

Does the G5-01 have SideWindows?

Unlike its predecessor (the Speedglas 9100 series), the Speedglas G5-01 does not have peripheral SideWindows. Removing them contributes to the helmet’s narrower profile, which in turn makes it easier to move around in tight spots. But never fear! You still benefit from a great view of your surroundings through the larger viewing area and 15% larger clear grinding visor!

Is the G5-01 available without respiratory protection?

As the Speedglas G5-01VC welding helmet is designed for heavy-duty welding, which naturally produces a lot of welding fume, it is not available in a non-respiratory configuration. You do however have the choice of purchasing the new G5-01 with either the Adflo powered air respirator (PAPR) or the Versaflo V-500E supplied air regulator.

How does Speedglas G5-01VC Bluetooth connectivity work?

The first step is to download the 3M™ Connected Equipment App onto your smart phone. From there you can securely pair your smart phone with your Speedglas G5-01VC welding lens.

Once connected, it’s all at your fingertips! You can remotely adjust your lens settings, program up to 4 memory modes, review your own welding stats and more!

Why change settings on the G5-01 Bluetooth app rather than your lens?

Convenience. Instead of selecting your shade, sensitivity and delay settings every time you want to change application, you can now store the set-up for your most used applications in your app. For example, you could store a TIG setting, a High Amp MIG setting and 8 other settings and with the press of a button jump between set-ups.

Remember that this is optional. Just like a car with automatic and manual transmission you can choose to set it manually with the lens or automatically with the app.

Can my mate hijack my lens using Bluetooth?

Fortunately not, as long as you’re using it! The helmet can only connect to one phone at a given time – this feature is officially prank-proof!

How do I remove my welding visor?

This G5-01 flip-up welding visor can be removed for non-welding applications, making the helmet 35% lighter for extended periods of grinding or other tasks.

This is really easy to do! Simply unscrew the two dials on either side of the helmet to completely remove the visor, then reattach the dials again and you’re ready to go!

How can I use my task light for heavy-duty welding without it getting damaged?

The task light is built for hard-wearing environments, with an outer cover plate to protect against sparks and spatter. This can easily be removed and replaced if pits and scratches do occur.

How do I adjust brightness on the optional task light?

The G5-01 task light has adjustable light intensity, which you can manage via the external button on its side. Once you’ve pressed this button to turn the light on, hold it down to cycle through the different light levels until you find one that’s suitable for your needs!

And finally… where can I buy a G5-01?

The Speedglas G5-01 Heavy-Duty Welding Helmet is available through all the best welding distributors around Australia and New Zealand - find your nearest Speedglas stockist here! Or, if you live in a rural or regional area or prefer to purchase online you can do so through the AWS website.
