New 3M™ Speedglas™ Heavy Duty Welding Helmet G5-01 Wins International Design Award

The 3M Speedglas Heavy Duty Welding Helmet G5-01 has literally just launched in Australia and New Zealand and it’s already taking home the silverware, or in this case, the Red Dot Design Award. Judged by an international jury of expert designers, the Speedglas G5-01 was awarded the Red Dot Design Award for ‘Product Design Excellence’. The jury determined that the new Speedglas G5-01 was an exceptional combination of functionality and individualisation all delivered within a streamlined design. Below we take a look at the innovative and customisable design features of the 3M Speedglas G5-01 that made it the stand-out winner.

Individualise the Way You See Your Weld

The user’s highly individualised experience starts with the ability to - for the very first time - set your own variable colour during welding. Individuals see colours differently and since welding environments can be radically different from one another, the option to select natural, cool or warm colour tones provides better vision and more control of the weld puddle. The welder determines which colour tone provides the best viewing contrast for their welds, and the most comfort for their eyes making the experience highly personal and functional.

Personalised Climate Control

Combined with a 3M powered or supplied air respirator, the G5-01 respiratory welding helmet features adjustable airflow climate control that allows the welder to determine where the air enters the welding helmet and where it is directed: over their face, towards the welding visor or a personalised combination of both.

Light Your Own Space

In another first, you can install an optional, very bright task light onto the helmet that is powered for hours by the respirator’s battery pack. This task light was designed specifically for welders to deliver even light distribution at a normal welding distance.

Configure Your Protection

The helmet is highly configurable, allowing the welder to select from an array of head, neck and shoulder protectors. Another reconfiguration option is the ability to entirely remove the welding visor, reducing weight by over 35% while maintaining full eye, face and respiratory protection for non-welding tasks. It only takes a moment to reinstall the visor back onto the helmet.

Slimmer, More Streamlined Design

The helmet is designed for heavy duty arc welding - yet it is slim, making it easier for the welder to enter tight spaces. Its streamlined design features non-protruding external user controls designed to be operated by gloved hands.

The Red Dot design award’s origins reach back to the 1950s. In 2018 alone, more than 14,000 entries for all design categories were received from over 70 countries. The award has established itself internationally as one of the most recognisable quality seals for outstanding designs. The jury considered not only extraordinary aesthetic qualities but also how a product’s design is an integral part of innovative solutions. The jury’s full criteria also included functionality, formal quality, ergonomics, durability, symbolic and emotional inspiration, empowering peripherals, self-explanatory nature, and ecological soundness.
